Who here has a full time job? Who here sometimes works more than 40 hours a week? (Me: raises hand twice.) Don’t get me wrong, I love to work. Interior Design is something I’m passionate about and I truly love going to work most days. Part of my love of the work leads me to commit to quality work, which sometimes leads to 40+ hour weeks.
Do the math. When you’re spending more than 9-10 hours a day at work, unless you don’t sleep, you are spending more hours awake at work than at home. Which brings me to this piece of advice: personalize your desk at work! It doesn’t have to be your personal living room, but it should be a place where you enjoy going to, and that inspires you. I like to think of my desk at work as an extension of my home- because for 40+ hours a week I do live there!
Humans are by nature territorial and we like to claim space. So I say, claim your space. Make it be a reflection of who you are professionally. Don’t let your space distract you, but give yourself a reminder of why you’re there. In my space I have my Board of Architects certificate, inspirational quotes, a few personal photos, and lots of magazines and books that inspire me!
When I need a quick break from the computer screen, I have a place for my eyes to rest. I read reminders to myself. I become inspired again. For me, personalizing my desk helps me to enjoy working and therefore work better. How do you personalize your workspace? -C
